Corps of Engineers Likely to Restrict Access on Cumberland River Tailwaters

The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Nashville District is expected to announce Thursday its plan to restrict boating access immediately above and below its dams along the Cumberland River.

As I reported in the 12/2 and 12/9 editions of The Courier-Journal the Corps has declined to provide specifics about what restrictions are coming. But sighting safety concerns in hazardous waters they are expected to block anglers from areas immediately below the dams, which are some of the most productive fishing areas in the river.

Fishery officials from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency are opposed to any restrictions and have said so. Representatives from both state agencies met with the Corps last week to try to dissuade the federal agency from proceeding with its restrictive plan, apparently to no avail.
