MURRAY, Ky – In Sunday’s final round of the FLW Tour stop on Kentucky Lake Dave Lefebre did what Chris Baumgardner couldn’t do and that was yank in a hefty sack of bass to win the tournament and the $125,000 top prize.
Lefebre had a five-fish 19 pound 5 ounce limit Sunday for a four-day total of 77-3. He could have had more. “I lost two five pounders early,” the Erie, Pa., pro said. “I had them in the net – in the net – and they both jumped out before I could get them in the boat.”
Baumgardner, who led by 2 ounces going into the final, had a 12-11 limit and a 70-11 total.
The rest of the field (10 pros advanced to the final day) hauled in limits but no one came close to Lefebre, who used a Storm swim bait over shell beds (“bluish” was his description of the bait color) to catch most of his fish.
The most impressive performance of the tournament was delivered by Casey Martin. Martin won the co-angler title ($25,000, including a $5,000 Ranger bonus). It was his third co-angler title in the past two years. Martin lead wire-to-wire and no one came close after he opened the tournament with a 22 pound 12 ounce limit. Co-anglers fish front the back of the boat and are paired with a different pro each day. They go where the pro goes and fish how the pro wants to fish (shallow vs. deep; grass vs. ledges), etc.
