Kentucky’s Cumberland River Tailwater Surrenders Sturgeon

Chuck Strange, owner of Strange Bait Co., in Burkesville, Ky., had a couple of fishermen come into his bait shop yesterday with a fish they couldn’t identity.

Strange couldn’t believe it.

“It was a sturgeon,” said Strange. “I’ve been here since 1989 and it’s the first one I’ve ever seen.”

Strange measured and photographed the 34-inch fish then, on orders from state game officials, released it back into the river.

The successful sturgeon angler was a 10-year-old boy who was fishing with his uncle below the highway 61 bridge near Burkesville, which is about 35 miles downriver from Lake Cumberland. His bait and tactics: red worms fished on the bottom.
