Basketball notes

With basketball being a near spiritual experience for many in my adopted state of Kentucky, work and almost everything else came to a halt Thursday afternoon while the University of Louisville Cardinals and the University of Kentucky Wildcats opened play in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

The collective sigh of relief you may have heard came after the Wildcats won, barely beating a determined Princeton team with a last second shot.

The Cardinals, however, are on the way home following a stunning loss to the Morehead State Eagles (another Kentucky school, although not one reputed to be a basketball powerhouse).

While not a dyed-in-the-red Cardinal fan I have nothing against U of L. But good for the Eagles, I say; their upset being akin to an upstart bass fisherman upending Kevin VanDam or Kevin Wirth and claiming and an Elite Series trophy. Unlikely, but always possible. And who doesn’t like an underdog?

Maybe Coach Pitino and the Cards will wash away their sorrows with a fishing trip. Waters are across the state are a little high but the weekend weather should be nearly ideal. Crappie and bass are biting.
