Blackbirds

By now you’ve probably heard about the thousands of dead blackbirds that rained down on Beebe, Ark., about a half hour before midnight on New Year’s Eve.

Arkansas wildlife officials estimated as many as 5,000 birds plummeted the town, which is located about 35 miles northeast of Little Rock and has a population of around 5,000.

Strange? Yes.

Explainable? Maybe.

One theory: fireworks and other noisemakers being used in celebration of the approaching new year frightened the birds, which flew fast, low and haphazardly into houses, trees and other structures, resulting in the mass killing.
